Important Updates & Notices:

Guided Reading

: This week we have new guided reading books. We will be discussing main characters and character traits.

Home Reading Log:

Keep up the good work with your reading logs. Parents, please don’t forget to sign the log at the end of each week.

Poetry:

Your child will be coming home with a poetry folder this Wednesday. In the folder will be a letter explaining “The Great Poetry Race.” (I have attached the same letter to the end of this letter.) Although this is not a required activity, I highly encourage each child to participate. Repetitive reading can increase a child’s fluency, accuracy, expression, and comprehension.

English:

This week we are discussing the 4 types of sentences – test Wednesday.

Math:

We are beginning chapter 3 – rounding. On Tuesday, encourage your child to share the steps on how to round with you. __________________________________________________________________________________________

This week we are beginning a new unit – Animal Classification. __________________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Parents,

This week we will begin

The Great Poetry Race

. I will select a poem for our students to read. We will read the poems in class on Wednesday and bring it home in our poetry folders. Your child will read the poem to as many people as possible throughout the week. After your child reads each poem, the person who was read to signs the back of the poetry page. Return the poetry folder to school the next Wednesday. The goal is to read to as many different adults as possible, so only one signature per adult will be allowed. Also, only one signature per reading is allowed. For example, in order to get signatures from two people listening at the same time, the student would need to read the poem twice. Read to family friends, aunts, uncles, grandparents, people at church, sporting events…the possibilities are endless. Feel free to call relatives or family friends. Your child can read to them over the phone! You can “sign” for that person. Any student with 10 or more signatures at the end of the week will get a sticker on their race sticker card. The student(s) with the most signatures will earn a second sticker.

The purpose of the Great Poetry Race is to build reading fluency. Reading fluency is when children are able to read quickly and accurately with expression. Research shows that when students read text multiple times, their fluency increases. This in turn improves comprehension or understanding of what has been read.

The students are not required to read the poem a certain number of times. I hope that The Great Poetry Race will be an enjoyable way for your child to practice reading for an audience while improving both fluency and comprehension. Please let me know if you have any questions!
